Renew, Reduce, Recycle, Upcycle: Why Donate After Decluttering?

The first step to a successful move is to declutter. Even if you are not moving, spring cleaning and decluttering can renew your home and refresh your spirit. Check out the historical and spiritual roots of spring cleaning across many cultures!

3 Reasons to Donate

Once you have finished your decluttering and put away or packed the items you are keeping, you will find yourself left with two piles: give away and throw away.  It can be tempting to throw the give-away pile out with the throw-away pile to save a step. However, here are few nudges to reconsider the donation option…and a helpful tool to help you do so!

1.        Help your community.

By donating your gently used items, you are putting essential items within reach of those of little means. In addition, many of the charitable organizations that distribute donated items provide volunteer or job opportunities to members in your community.

2.        Reduce waste.

Much of our waste takes a long time to decompose. With landfills reaching capacity, it is a worthwhile goal to throw away as little as possible. One way to do that is to give our unwanted belongings a second life in someone else’s hands.

3.        Conserve.

New consumer goods require materials and energy to be produced and delivered. By making the most of items already produced, we conserve the resources needed to make new items.

Your unwanted items could have a few lives left in them in the hands of others. So while you are decluttering, ask yourself, “Could someone else benefit from these items?” If the answer is yes, consider donating them. How ?To whom? Hopefully you can find a charitable organization that reflects your values. Use this handy guide for a few suggestions of organizations that accept donations, including some that will pick up your donated items.
