A College Student’s Guide To Storage

In the midst of preparing for finals and nailing down a summer job, the question “Where am I going to store my stuff?” is one that college students frequently overlook. Camelot Moving has plenty of experience in this area, and we’re happy to offer the following tips to make your storage search a little easier.

Get a Head Start

Unless you grew up close to campus and can transport your belongings back to your parents’ house by car, you’ll need to find some local storage units where you can keep books, furniture, and other items until fall rolls around. But in the madness surrounding the school year’s end (especially if you’re graduating), it’s easy to put off securing storage. That’s why our local movers recommend getting a head-start, i.e. a couple of weeks before move-out day. Your first step can be packing up all of your wintertime clothes and getting them out of the way. Once that’s done, take an hour or so each day to go through your belongings and decide what’s going home, what’s going into storage, and what you might be able to part with.

By the time move-out is a day or two away, you should have everything boxed up except the bare essentials: bedding, toiletries, and some clothes.

Think Seasonal

While you pack, keep at the top of your mind the fact that summer items are a priority. This will help you avoid an unfortunate circumstance whereby you get home, are psyched to hit the beach, and realize you put your favorite bathing suit into storage. You might go so far as to write down any big plans for the summer – vacation, job, formal evenings, etc. – in order to ensure that you bring home everything that those plans entail.

Declutter

In the first section we mentioned parting ways with unnecessary items, so let’s return to that topic because it’s important – especially for college kids who are moving a mile a minute throughout the school year. As much as you might want to declutter during the year, there are probably 10 other things on your agenda, so consider this “end-of-year storage project” as the perfect time to downsize. Donate clothes you don’t wear anymore, sell old textbooks for cash, and get rid of any furniture you’re no longer enamored with. This will save you a little bit of money in terms of storage costs, but the bigger benefit is that you’re streamlining your life.

Team Up With Friends

We have yet to meet a college kid who couldn’t use an extra buck or two, which is why it’s a great idea to team up with friends on a storage unit. Help each other pack and load up the car/truck (if you don’t have wheels, hopefully a friend does), and then unload together and save time moving things into your shared storage unit. And, tying in with the point above about downsizing, if you need to bribe a friend or two for help or wheels, you’ll have some free items with which to whet their appetite.
