Don't Let the Season Fool you . . . the Right Time Is Now!

The right time is now!

Over the years I've heard people say there's a right time or particularly good season to start certain projects. And, absolutely, there are seasons in the year and chapters in life better suited for a new start than others. For example, don’t plant tomatoes in December, and avoid moving a family with school-aged kids during finals week.

However, the older I get and the more new chapters I’ve started (and finished), the more I have seen that good changes don’t really follow a calendar. They just show up, like a baby due in January arriving in December, giving you an early tax break—something I experienced thanks to my firstborn!

I remember some years back in our 30-somethings my wife was introduced to scuba diving. She took to it like . . . well, like a duck to water. (I on the other hand preferred my head above water, ideally my feet on dry land.) I cheered her on while she went on to get many certifications and explored oceans and cenotes around the globe. I'm sure happy we did not put off these adventures, making them a “someday thing!"

Some of the best decisions I’ve seen people make were made “late in the year,” when they could have easily reasoned that it would be best to wait until January. Families who had been holding off until after the holidays have decided to proceed with a relocation. They wanted a fresh start to the new year, and as a result, they sooner enjoyed the peace of mind that comes with being where they were meant to be.

In trucking, we don’t put off a safe stop to respond to a warning light just because the mile marker says there are only 10 miles to go to the next rest area. If it’s time to take care of the truck, the right time is now. Football coaches don’t wait until the playoffs to call a winning play—they run it when it’s the right play against the right team with the right lineup. (I love football analogies in autumn.)

Likewise, in life, there may be an ideal point when a new direction feels natural, but even the smallest step toward something good is timeless. A new routine, a decision to downsize, a chance to finally make the move you’ve been talking about—it doesn’t have to wait until next year.

Heading into the last quarter of 2025, is there something good you're putting off? I’m sure at one point or another, we’ve all said something like: “Why didn’t I sell that money pit sooner?” “Why did I wait until now to try that new hobby?” “Why didn’t I make that career pivot earlier?”

Let's not wait. Whether it’s a change in your home, your work, your health, or simply the way you spend your time, you’ll never regret starting sooner. After all, if you start working on your New Year’s resolution now, you’ll be 90 days ahead of schedule! Of course, if your next good thing involves a move or change to your home, perhaps opening up a space by sending items to storage, I know a guy! Give me a call!
