Inspiration for a Spontaneous Summer

Let the summer surprise you.

Summer is creeping up! Are you making travel plans? To make the most of the time their kids have between school years, many families have already booked their summer trips. But for those of us in the summer-intensive moving industry, our wanderlust summer moments sneak up on us, unplanned and perhaps all the more delightful.

One such moment took place about 45 years ago when my best friend and co-pilot, Rick, and I found ourselves in Florida with a bit of downtime between deliveries. On a whim, we rented a tiny sailboat. After a 10-minute tutorial, we looked at each other as if to ask, “We good?” And we were off! Just two guys catching the wind and learning to sail in a quiet bay with no agenda and no GPS—making a memory that has stayed with me until this day.

The peace and tranquility of that unplanned adventure often contrast with the tension and anxiety I pick up on from others as they try to navigate summer invitations, plans, and decisions:

“We have to get together!”

“Should we plan a trip?”

“Where has the time gone?”

Summer is exciting. But let’s be honest: it can also be exhausting. Decision fatigue is real, and by the time you’ve scrolled through endless Airbnb listings, vacation ads, and city event calendars, you might find yourself more overwhelmed than excited.

Perhaps we all could use the sort of summer where the best moments sneak up on you, where planning gives way to presence. Maybe a day at the beach will turn into an impromptu sunset bonfire; a backyard BBQ will last well into the night culminating in stargazing; or a random weekend void of plans will turn into a scavenger hunt via flea markets, antique shops, and estate sales for that priceless piece you’ve been dreaming of. While en route, may I recommend adding discovering the best ice cream shop within 100 miles to the scavenger hunt? You won’t regret it.

Where will I be this summer? I’m not sure. Maybe here. Maybe in La Jolla checking out the sea lions. Maybe on the road. But wherever I am, I will be taking your call if your summer plans include moving to a new zip code!

Summer awaits.
